Deputy Johnny Lemen Week

Each year the Sheriff recognizes outstanding deputies, and this year Deputy Johnny Lemen, our contracted township deputy, received the following awards:

Meritorious Award for OVI Arrests and Traffic Citations – so far this year Deputy Lemen has made over 36 OVI (previously DUI) arrests and issued well over 300 traffic citations
Perfect Attendance Award
“Best of the Best” - the highest award a deputy can receive from the Sheriff. Deputy Lemen is now a two time recipient.

On behalf of the residents of Bethel Township, the trustees would like to thank Deputy Lemen for his dedication and hard work. They have proclaimed the week of November 26 through Dec. 3 as Deputy Johnny Lemen Week in Bethel Township in his honor.

If you see Deputy Lemen around be sure and congratulate him, and thank him for his hard work.

Donnelsville Park Has a New Playground

Chris Cotterman was promoted to the position of Lieutenant in the Bethel Township Fire Department at the June 28th meeting. We want to offer congratulations and best wishes as he begins his career as an officer with the department.

Clean-Up Day a Success

This year’s Clean-Up Day was the most successful ever, with seven dumpsters filled at the Tecumseh site and four filled at the Park Layne site. We had to send some people from Park Layne to Tecumseh because dumpsters there filled so early. We do not have a vehicle count for the Tecumseh site, but over 100 cars and trucks came through the Park Layne site, some more than once, and most had large loads to dispose of.

Thank you to Clark County Waste Management District, the Clark County Combined Health District, Impact Bethel, and especially the Sheriff’s Department and Pride Workers who did such a fantastic job helping unload all those vehicles and dispose of the trash properly. We couldn’t have done it without all of you.

Response to the free couponing class has been so great we have had to lose registrations. The instructor has agreed to come back and teach it again and we are now taking names for that class. A Busy Week in Bethel Township

There’s a lot going on this week, especially if you are cleaning up around the house.

This week is our brush pickup for June. If you have any tree or hedge trimmings you need to dispose of call the township at 849-9499 and get on our list for free pickup.

We have a free coupon class this Thursday at Station 51, 3333 Lake Rd. in Medway. The class starts at 7:00 and seating is limited, so call if you are interested.

Finally, Saturday is our big township cleanup day, starting at 8:00 a.m. and going till noon or until the dumpsters are full. Check out the last post for a list of what you can bring to dispose of. Let’s get the township cleaned up!

Township Cleanup Day June 11 from 8 till noon

The signs are out and the dumpsters are ordered – it must be getting close to time for Bethel Township’s Annual Cleanup Day!

This year’s cleanup is Saturday, June 11, and there will again be three sites to dispose of your hard-to-get-rid-of items. Dumpsters will be set up in the front parking lot of Tecumseh High School, at the old Park Layne School site on Cliffisde Dr., and at the old Westlake School site on Walsh. (You must live within New Carlisle city limits to use the Westlake site.) The sites will be open for dumping starting at 8:00 a.m., and will stay open until noon or until the dumpsters are full, whichever comes first.

There aren’t too many rules, but here they are. First the list of “you can bring”:

1. You can bring construction debris, metal, cardboard, old furniture, and other large items at no charge.

2. You can dispose of old applianes at no charge, as long as they have not contained coolant. Stoves, washers, dryers, etc. are free; refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, and dehumidifiers have a $5 charge to safely evacuate the coolant.

3. You can dispose of up to ten old car and light truck tires for a fee – $2 each if they are off the rim, $5 if they are on the rim. No farm tires will be accepted.

4. You can bring mercury for disposal – old thermometers, thermostats, and even bulk amounts. The health department is providing new digital thermometers in exchange for old mercury ones.

Now the list of “you cannot bring”:

1. We cannot accept any hazardous materials at this event, like paint, pesticides, oil, etc.
HINT: A Hazardous Waste collection event will be held August 20th at the Clark County Recycling Center, 1602 W. Main St. in Springfield.
HINT: You can safely dispose of latex paint by opening the can and allowing it to dry completely, then putting it out for your regular trash pickup. If it is a large amount of paint pour it onto newspaper or kitty litter so it will dry faster.

2. We cannot accept any bagged household trash.

3. We cannot accept any yard waste, lawn clippings, brush, etc. The township does brush pickup the first full week of each month, May through October, for brush trimmings and storm damage, and you can get on the list for pickup by calling 849-9499.

Come early, as the program ends when the containers are full. Materials left after the program ends will be considered illegal dumping.

The Great Dog Rescue (UPDATE – He’s Home!)

Our fire department is used to getting calls to rescue cats out of trees, but today was different. Today they rescued a dog out of a basement.

The basement involved is all that is left of a house that burned in the Crystal Lakes area earlier this year. Two county employees, Allan and Marie, were there taking pictures of the foundation in preparation for permitting the owners to rebuild the home. That’s when they spotted this:

There’s a dog curled up in the corner of that basement!! A basement that has no stairs and no means of entry except by falling in and, of course, no way for the dog to get back out. So Allan and Marie came to the fire station and asked for help, which was quickly offered.

Firefighter/EMT Scott McLin was the first to climb down a ladder and approach the dog.

Finding the dog very friendly, Scott carried it up the ladder and firefighter/paramedic Jimmy Carpenter found a rope to attach to its collar. He then checked it for injuries.

The male adult dog appears to be healthy, and while we try to find its owner it is being fostered by a township employee, with the assistance of Rescue Me, Inc.

If you recognize this dog please call the township at 849-9499 so we can unite him with his owner.

UPDATE: His family found him! The dog is named Swamper and he is an almost-two-years-old Blue Heeler. His owners have been searching for him, and they were reunited through a poster his foster mom Melanie (also known as the township fiscal officer) put up at the corner of Lake and Gerlaugh roads. He got out of his yard sometime during the day Monday, was rescued from the basement on Tuesday, and went home on Thursday. And he is VERY happy. All’s well that ends well.

Memorial Day Parade in Medway

Don’t miss Medway’s annual Memorial Day Parade Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. The parade starts at Medway School on Middle St., goes down Sycamore to Main St., then turns west and proceeds to the cemetery where memorial ceremonies are held. The parade is sponsored by Lake Rd. VFW Post 9684, who hold an open house lunch immediately following the activities.

You may also want to participate in New Carlisle’s annual walk to the cemetery, which begins at Howard’s IGA at the north end of town and walks to the cemetery for memorial services. Lunch is then provided at the Eagles Aerie on Quick Rd. for all who wish to attend.

Memorial Day is more than the opening holiday of summer. It is a time to remember the sacrifices of all those who had proven that freedom isn’t free. Come out to a parade and show your appreciation for the freedoms we enjoy.

Free Couponing Class June 9

Maybe it’s because of that show Extreme Couponing, but it seems like everyone is talking about couponing lately. Not using coupons, which is cutting out a few, taking them to the store, and feeling good about saving $5. No, couponing is way more serious, and you don’t want to get between a dedicated couponer and his/her inserts from the Sunday paper. Especially if they have a pair of scissors in their hands.

Does it work? I am personally related to someone who brought home $40 of free pasta from Kroger’s in one trip, and her husband who was paid 42¢ by Wal-Mart to carry $25 worth of groceries out of their store. And this was only their second week of couponing. Are you interested in having a good time while learning how they did it?

Bethel Township has been able to schedule a FREE class for anyone wanting to learn how to save money with coupons. It will be given Thursday, June 9, at 7:00 p.m. in the Meeting/Training Room of the new Fire Station, 3333 Lake Rd. in Medway. While there is no charge, you MUST pre-register to save a seat. You can do so by sending an email to the township at email@betheltownship.info. Or call 849-9499 ext. 3 and leave a message for Nancy. Include your name and contact info.

The class will be taught by Hillary Gale, who blogs at www.TheCouponBelle.com. And no, Hillary is not the same person mentioned above. But she taught that person how to do it.
